Perhaps roads cannot be built, instead they appear when an area becomes heavily traveled.
I heard someone mention that they were worried roads would lead to players covering their base in roads. I suggest roads become very expensive, maybe 5 stone per square. The speed bonus is nice, this way players really need to consider where they place their roads.

I'd like to add to this idea to let the road disappear if it isn't used, and upgrade if it is.
By words "used" and "not used" I mean if for example 1000 times someone use road square, it'll upgrade, and if noone walk on it during for example 5 minutes, grass will dominate it.
